Over 480 designs were submitted and only 41 designs were recognized. An official awards ceremony and exhibition will be held during the evening of October 11 at the Center for Architecture in Manhattan, and a panel discussion for the Project Awards Category is planned for November 29. Mark E. Strauss, planning principal at FXFOWLE, noted that the Nassau Centre project was the only planning project to be honored. "We are very pleased that the AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture has chosen to honor a planning project, and it suggests that the AIA is becoming more appreciative of the role of architects and designers in the public planning process," he said. The vision addresses the opportunity for planned development within an almost ten square mile area in the center of Nassau county, including the area known as the "Nassau Hub." The plan begins with a new transportation system that will link the existing Nassau Coliseum, existing communities, recreational areas and business centers with the hub. Building off of the transportation improvements, the plan suggests new commercial buildings, new sports entertainment and tourism venues, workforce housing, a zoo at Eisenhower Park, new housing in Hempstead Village, an improved Museum Row at Mitchel Field, a green-belt "emerald ribbon" of pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths connecting existing parks and preserves and a new transit boulevard from EAB EAB Emerald Ash Borer (insect) EAB Environmental Appeals Board (EPA) EAB Educational Activities Board (IEEE) EAB Environmental Advisory Board EAB Egyptian American Bank Plaza to Roosevelt Field Mall Roosevelt Field Mall is the largest shopping mall in the state of New York and ninth in the country as measured by gross leaseable area at 2,189,941 sq ft. "The recognition by the AIA of this plan proves that the Nassau Hub, and Nassau county in general, is on the right track for the future," Suozzi said. "I want to thank FXFOWLE Architects and STV for their tireless efforts and determination to help shape the vision of this county." Currently the Nassau County Hub is the biggest economic driver for the county, but it is not linked to the major transit corridors that serve Long Island. |
