AIA Portland Announces Annual Design Award Winners; AIA Honors Mayor Katz for Outstanding Leadership of City Building for Portland.


PORTLAND, Ore. -- In conjunction with the annual Architecture Week events, American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA  Portland awarded top honors to Oregon architects for excellence in design. Architects were recognized for their work on high profile architecture, planning, urban planning and interior design projects across the country.

AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture  Portland Board of Directors also awarded Portland Mayor Vera Katz an honorary AIA Portland membership for her support of Portland's design and architecture community, for her accomplishments in fostering urban livability and for her leadership in creating an outstanding legacy of city building.

With the growing participation in LEED certification and environmentally friendly design, AIA Portland added a new award category for Sustainable Design, which recognizes projects that successfully integrate design excellence with energy and resource efficiency.

Architects were also recognized in the categories of People's Choice, Craftsmanship, Unbuilt Projects and Built Projects. The top honor in Built Projects went to Allied Works Architecture for a private residence in Sun Valley, Idaho <includeonly></includeonly> Sun Valley is a city and affluent resort community in the central part of the U.S. state of Idaho, adjacent to the city of Ketchum in Blaine County.  which demonstrated an exquisite combination between materials and site, framing the landscape for beautifully orchestrated views.

Projects were critiqued by an esteemed jury of national architects including Kathryn Dean of Dean/Wolf Architects New York, NY, Tom Kundig of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, a Seattle-based architectural firm, was founded by architect Jim Olson in 1967. Current principals include Jim Olson, Rick Sundberg, Scott Allen and Tom Kundig. , Seattle, Wash. and Robert McCarter, University of Florida University of Florida is the third-largest university in the United States, with 50,912 students (as of Fall 2006) and has the eighth-largest budget (nearly $1.9 billion per year). UF is home to 16 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes.  School of Architecture, Gainesville, Fla.

Awards were presented in the following categories:
