AIA NY president unveils April conference agenda.


Terrence E, O'Neal, president of the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA  New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 State, announced plans for the organization's "One New York State: Urban Policy and Regional Design Conference."

The event will be held in Albany, N.Y. on Wednesday, April 5.

The all-day symposium will interweave the two themes O'Neal has outlined for AIANYS: One New York State and Livable Communities. It will feature a series of interactive sessions between the architects and elected officials.

Some of the topics will include smart growth, the role of planning and zoning boards, the impact of sustainable or 'green' design and adaptive reuse Adaptive reuse is the process of adapting old structures for new purposes.

Public officials scheduled to speak at the event include: Albany Mayor Gerald D. Jennings on neighborhood revitalization and home ownership; Bronx borough president Adolfo Carrion, Jr. on waterfront revitalization, the Yankee Stadium Neighborhood Redevelopment Plan and commercial development; Fred W. Thiele, Jr., New York State Assembly The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of New York. The Assembly is composed of 150 members representing an equal amount of districts, with each district having an average population of 127,000.  member from Suffolk county on transportation initiatives and the Community Preservation Fund; Yonkers Mayor Philip A. Amicone on downtown and waterfront development; Syracuse Mayor Matthew Driscoll on downtown revitalization and a comprehensive urban plan; Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown; and Peter Baynes, executive director of the New York State Conference of Mayors.

The keynote address by former Rochester Mayor William A. Johnson, Jr. will explore challenges the new governor will face, new urban strategy and land use policies.
