AHMANSON FOES TO LAUNCH BLITZ : DESPITE SETBACKS, OPPONENTS OF DEVELOPMENT VOW FIGHT TO THE END.

Byline: Christopher Noxon Daily News Staff Writer

Opponents of a city-sized project planned for the southwestern tip of Ventura County pledged Monday to take their case to court, council chambers and cable airwaves airwaves

following a series of victories for the developer.

Members of the environmental group Save Open Space said Monday that they are regrouping after a series of rulings in favor of the $1 billion project. Two weeks ago, the California Supreme Court declined to consider a second appeal lodged by the group, while the Calabasas City Council agreed Jan. 29 to drop its objections in return for street improvements.

But opponents promise to lodge more protests against a project they say will endanger en·dan·ger

``We're starting Act Two,'' said Mary Wiesbrock, president of SOS SOS, code letters of the international distress signal. The signal is expressed in International Morse code as … — — — … (three dots, three dashes, three dots). . ``We're going to fight this until every last house is built.''

Opponents lost a key ally in January when the Calabasas City Council voted to take control over street improvements designed to absorb traffic generated by the massive development.

The project calls for 3,050 homes, a 300-room hotel, two schools, four parks and two golf courses. While located within Ventura County, all roads All Roads is a 2001 interactive fiction game by Jon Ingold that placed first at the 2001 Interactive Fiction Competition. Mary Trigg, spokeswoman for the Ahmanson Ranch project, said Monday that a construction schedule has not been set. Trigg said the developer has been careful to follow tough environmental and planning regulations.

``This is a very sound proposal, and we did all the things we were required to do,'' Trigg said.

Opponents say the development will destroy wilderness more than twice the size of Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America. . The loss in open space is emphasized in a four-minute political program opponents produced for cable access that pictures pastoral scenes of the property slated for development.

``Ahmanson Ranch is gated up in its own little valley, so most people have never had a chance to see how beautiful it is,'' said Vince Curtis, a director of SOS. ``People think it's just tumbleweeds, but once they see it with their own eyes, they realize how much we will lose in this one project.''

Opponents are also planning to lead a four-day march from the property to the Ballona Wetlands The Ballona Wetlands is located in Southern California, USA adjacent to Marina del Rey and Playa Vista. . The march, which will begin April 14, is intended to focus attention on ``the last two remaining open places near Los Angeles slated for massive development,'' said organizer Mary Altmann.

Besides the public campaigns, Curtis said opponents will continue to lodge complaints when the developer files for changes to plans approved by Ventura County Supervisors in 1992.

``All of our lawsuits are gone with the wind, but we're in this to the very end,'' Curtis said. ``They've only got two or three hurdles left, but we'll be dogging them the whole way.''
