AGV's boost PET molding efficiency.

Productivity at Southeastern Container has surged since it substituted automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for forklifts to convey PET preforms and soda bottles at its plant in Enka, N.C. The facility, which molds preforms and bottles for Coca-Cola Co., uses six wire-guided vehicles on a 24/7 basis. New AGVs and software were installed recently by AGV Products, Charlotte, N.C.

"Our production process depends on accurate deployment of preforms," says Peter Falcigno, SE Container's technical manager. The facility has 24 closely spaced injection molding lines that make preforms for on-site blow molding and for shipment to six associated blow molding plants. Numerous preform sizes and types are produced in a constantly changing mix.

AGVs navigate the crowded, maze-like plant layout by following RF-emitting wires buried in the floor. Six AGVs visit 60 stations--transporting containers of preforms from the molding machines to the blow molding lines, shipping area, or a scrap area and retrieving empty containers. Each AGV also has a battery recharging station.

AGV's turn around in less space than the previously used forklifts. They are less likely to be involved in collisions and worker injuries. They also help speed changeovers at the molding machines by ensuring that the correct pallet type is always present to receive the preforms. AGV Products: (704) 845-111, www.agvp.com
