AGOURA SILENCES SIMI'S BIG WEAPON\AGOURA 60, SIMI VALLEY 56.

Byline: Bill Schlotter Daily News Staff Writer

There were at least six Division I college coaches in the crowd - including UCLA's Jim Harrick Jim Harrick (born July 25, 1938 in Charleston, West Virginia) is a former college basketball head coach who coached at Pepperdine University, UCLA, the University of Rhode Island and the University of Georgia.  - at Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura.  Wednesday night.

But that didn't make the visiting Agoura boys' basketball team nervous.

"They weren't here to see us," said the Chargers Joel Weiss, who led his teammates to a 60-56 Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. "They were here to see the big guy."

The big guy is Simi Valley's 6-foot-9 foreign-exchange-student center Pero Vasiljevic, who - believe it or not - had an off night while scoring 23 points.

And what the scouts saw was the Chargers defense consistently deny Vasiljevic the ball.

"The big thing was we were able to stop the big guy and deny him many second shots," said Weiss, who led the Chargers with 19 points.

Brian Laibow and Josh Portnoy had 11 points for Agoura. Ryan Yeager had 10.

Scott Blough had 14 points for Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  while Tony Campanario had 13.

Indeed, the Chargers denied Vasiljevic a field goal in both the second and third quarters.

The victory, sealed by free throws by Yeager and Weiss down the stretch, moves the Chargers (13-7, 7-4) a half-game behind Royal, which had its contest with Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. And had Weiss at least contemplating a league title.

"We're going to need some help," he said. "But you never know what's going to happen in this competitive league.

The road will be even tougher for the No. 5-ranked Pioneers (14-7, 6-5).

Simi Valley opened the game with a 12-2 run and led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, Vasiljevic scoring eight points in the period.

But the "Big Guy" was shut out in the second period and could manage just five free throws in the third as the Chargers took a 41-38 advantage into the final quarter.

Simi Valley caught the Chargers three times in the final quarter and briefly lead 50-49 with about four minutes left.
