on Kanan a quicker and freer route to both Canwood and to the freeway heading west, said Jim Thorsen, city engineer for Agoura Hills.

Additionally, the city will add a left-turn signal for southbound drivers trying to go east on Canwood, he said.

, especially in the early morning hours,'' Thorsen said.

As it is now, vehicles trying to get through the intersection are backed up for blocks during morning and afternoon rush hours, and lunch time.

up Kanan without the help of a signal.

And commuters who need to make a right turn onto the freeway heading west are often tied up behind drivers waiting out a red light to continue southbound on Kanan, Thorsen said.

``There definitely need to be improvements in that whole region around Kanan and the interchange. These are just two immediate relief projects,'' Thorsen said.

``This has been an ongoing problem for years,'' he added. ``Basically the whole section between Agoura Road and Canwood Street is a bottleneck because of the traffic configurations.''

Traffic delays are expected while the road work is conducted, Thorsen said. One southbound lane on Kanan will be closed for safety reasons.

The project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31.

The $245,000 project is funded mostly through Proposition C funds with additional general fund money from this year's budget allocated to complete the modifications.

In addition to the new land and traffic signal, work will include building a block wall to screen out the utility substation located at the intersection, enhancing landscaping to buffet a block wall and sidewalk A Microsoft service that was launched in 1997 to provide online arts and entertainment guides on the Web for major cities worldwide.
