AGOURA FILLS VOID : AGOURA 42, THOUSAND OAKS 14.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

The return of Agoura High quarterback Ryan McCann was put on hold for at least another week.

The Chargers, however, did not miss a beat Friday night, coasting to a 42-14 Marmonte League victory over Thousand Oaks at Agoura.

Chris Poling eclipsed the 200-yard mark for the fourth time, rushing for 219 yards in 22 carries and two touchdowns to help Agoura improve to 6-2 and 4-1.

Tight end Marcus Helfman, McCann's replacement at quarterback, completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards and a score. He also scored on runs of 3 and 1 yard. McCann, who separated his left and throwing shoulder against Royal on Oct. 9, took snaps and threw in practice this week. However, the area's top quarterback prospect said he felt residual pain and is questionable for the regular-season finale against Westlake.

``I was hoping to play tonight, but I didn't feel quite ready,'' said McCann, who watched from the sidelines in street clothes. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Helfman returned to tight end earlier this week. But the senior was forced back into the role of quarterback when McCann opted to sit out for the fifth consecutive week.

``I like quarterback, but I was ready to go back to tight end,'' Helfman said. ``I don't mind as long as we're winning.''

Scott Ange completed 11 of 15 passes for 120 yards and Glenn Perrault caught four passes for 70 yards for Thousand Oaks (4-5, 3-3).

Agoura jumped to a 21-0 second-quarter lead, scoring on its first play from scrimmage on a 73-yard run by Poling. Poling's final score, a 3-yard plunge to start the third quarter, stretched the Chargers' advantage to 28-7.

A 48-yard run by Poling, who rushed for 150 yards in the first half, helped set up the Chargers' second score, a 14-yard pass from Helfman to Ryan Antzoulatos with nine minutes left before halftime.

``We've been running a little more without Ryan and we're doing good,'' Poling said. ``But it would sure be nice to be back at full strength against Westlake.''

Agoura went ahead 21-0 on a 13-yard run by Helfman late with 2:34 remaining in the second quarter before the Lancers trimmed the deficit to 21-7 on a 14-yard run up the middle by Wes Cobos.

Agoura defensive lineman David Correia had two sacks, including a tackle for a loss of 14 yards that squelched a Thousand Oaks drive deep in Chargers territory with Agoura holding a 34-14 advantage.
