), an Atlanta-based energy services holding company, has agreed to a five-year contract with Itron to purchase AMR (1) (Adaptive Multi-Rate) A variable rate speech codec selected by the 3GPP for the 3G evolution of the GSM cellphone system (WCDMA). The agreement includes the expansion of Itron Mobile Automatic Meter Reading Automatic meter reading, or AMR, is the technology of automatically collecting data from water meter or energy metering devices (water, gas, electric) and transferring that data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing.  (AMR) technology into two additional states -- Florida and Virginia where AGL (programming) AGL - (Atelier de Genie Logiciel) French for IPSE.  has approximately 375,000 meters today.

For more than 20 years, AGL Resources has utilized Itron's meter reading technology to increase operational efficiency, improve meter reading and billing accuracy and save time and money. Three generations of gas modules have been deployed on meters at AGL -- the company has used every vintage of gas AMR endpoints produced by Itron. To date, Itron has shipped more than 1.5 million AMR modules to all of the combined AGL subsidiaries. The new contract provides for Itron to be the AMR and meter reading equipment provider throughout the AGL group and purchase orders will be issued by AGL throughout the five year term.

"AMR saves us money and helps us operate more efficiently -- which is why we are continuing to expand its use," said Ira Pearl, vice president of engineering at AGL Resources. "Our IT systems are compatible with Itron's solutions, and allow us to leverage our current assets Current Assets

This five-year contract is a reflection of our confidence in Itron and its technology."

Itron's industry leading AMR technology enables utilities to collect data from electric, natural gas and water meters automatically via radio signal. As a result, utilities are able to read meters efficiently and accurately, while eliminating the need for meter readers to access the customers' properties every month. To date, Itron has shipped nearly 50 million automated meters and AMR modules to utilities worldwide.

"Like so many leading utilities that have partnered with Itron for automation solutions, AGL Resources has found that the financial, operational and customer service benefits of AMR technology are indeed compelling," said Malcolm Unsworth, senior vice president of Itron's hardware solutions. "We are pleased that AGL Resources continues to count on us as they deploy Itron AMR technology into additional states."
