AGL Resources Announces Contributions To Keep Georgians Warm, Feed the Hungry, Protect Environment; Volunteers of the Year Named at Community Partnership Luncheon.


ATLANTA -- In what has become an annual tradition, AGL Resources AGL Resources, Inc. is a Fortune 1000, Forbes 2000 energy services holding company. "Our theme today takes a thoughtful page from the book, 'The Giving Tree,' by Shel Silverstein," said Paula Rosput, president, chairman and chief executive officer of AGL Resources. "It's a sweet story that reminds us of the importance of giving, no matter what your age or who you are. This thought is with us as we give to help others in our community."

Copies of the book were given to guests at the luncheon, which was attended by community and business leaders and state and local officials.

Most of AGL Resources' contributions will support energy assistance programs for those in need, including the company's $125,000 donation to Georgia's oldest statewide fuel-assistance program. The Heating Energy Assistance Team Inc. (HEAT) was begun by Atlanta Gas Light in 1983 to help low-income families. Since then, the program has grown to include partnerships with concerned citizens, energy companies, Georgia's state government and others. During the winter of 2003-2004, HEAT helped more than 1,700 Georgia households in emergency and crisis situations pay their energy bills.

Resource Service Ministries Energy Assistance Program - $50,000

Since 1984, Resource Service Ministries (RSM RSM (in Britain) regimental sergeant major ) has helped low-income, elderly neighbors with energy assistance. With AGL Resources as a partner since 2001, RSM has repaired and replaced 115 heaters and furnaces. RSM intervenes with natural gas marketers for those unable to pay their heating bills because of financial hardships, thus helping to offset utility disconnections.

United Way 211 - $40,000

United Way 211 gives metro Atlantans a simple, effective way to find help, linking callers with community social services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The 211 service is free, confidential and available in English and Spanish. AGL Resources' donation will support United Way's 211 program for callers who request help in an energy assistance crisis.

Sullivan Center - $35,000

At the Sullivan Center, the slogan is "A hand up, not a hand out." Completion of the Sullivan Center's life-skills program, which teaches self-sufficiency, is required of anyone needing financial help for energy assistance. AGL Resources has been a partner with the Sullivan Center since 2000 and has contributed more than $26,000 to its energy assistance programs.

Nature Conservancy, Georgia Chapter - $30,000

For 14 years, AGL Resources has supported the Nature Conservancy's mission to protect Georgia wildlife and natural habitats through land acquisitions, conservation easements EASEMENTS, estates. An easement is defined to be a liberty privilege or advantage, which one man may have in the lands of another, without profit; it may arise by deed or prescription. United Negro College Fund The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is a Fairfax, Virginia-based American philanthropic organization that fundraises college tuition money for African-American students and general scholarship funds for 39 historically black colleges and universities.  - $25,000

During its 60-year history, the United Negro College Fund has helped educate 300,000 students at more than 950 colleges. The $25,000 donation from AGL Resources will fund scholarships to UNCF UNCF United Negro College Fund, Inc.

 colleges and universities in the metro-Atlanta region.

Atlanta Community Food Bank - $10,000

The Atlanta Community Food Bank has outgrown its warehouse, so this donation will go to the organization's capital campaign for a new facility.

In announcing AGL Resources' volunteers of the year, Melanie Platt, senior vice president, human resources, noted that V-Force volunteers participate in civic activities ranging from building Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife.  houses and mentoring at Parkside Elementary School to cooking breakfast at the Atlanta Union Mission and supporting children involved in Cool Girls and CHRIS Kids. In 2003, the V-Force donated more than 30,000 volunteer hours to activities in Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee, where AGL Resources' three utilities are located.

Rowland and Mantooth were honored for amassing more volunteer hours than anyone else in the V-Force. Rowland, an office assistant in Atlanta Gas Light's Savannah office, participates in fund-raising activities for the March of Dimes

Mantooth is an honorary lifetime member of the Chattanooga Sertoma Service Club. He visits 25 to 30 shut-ins each month to give their caregivers a break.
