AGENCY THAT MENDS LIVES NEEDS HELP, TOO.

The trouble started when vandals Vandals, ancient Germanic tribe. They originated in N Jutland and, along with other Germanic peoples, settled in the valley of the Oder about the 5th cent. B.C. ``For the first time, I feel desperate,'' said the 31-year-old Pacoima resident, whose wife, Suleyma Landaverde, 21, gave birth to their daughter just last week.

The couple turned last month to Meeting Each Need with Dignity, a Pacoima-based agency that provides medical and dental care, emergency food, clothing, furniture, English and computer classes, and job placement for low-income families in the northeast San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

For the past month, MEND has supplied Boch and Landaverde with food, clothing and blankets.

In return, Boch and Landaverde volunteer at MEND several times a week. Landaverde sorts donated do·nate

``It makes me feel proud,'' Landaverde said. ``I'm happy to do it. I'm helping out here, and they're helping me.''

Many of the clients given assistance by MEND also volunteer at the center, said the nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

``A lot of them feel very isolated. This gives them a chance to feel a sense of community,'' Hill said. ``It gives them a chance to give something back and get job experience.''

In addition to tools for Boch, MEND needs donations of cash, food, clothing and furniture.

``We meet every Tuesday to pray that we get through the week,'' said Gina Mirabella, the agency's food program coordinator. ``Sometimes, we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what we're going to do about money, so we pray, and somehow it comes in.''

MEND also needs volunteers to help pack food boxes and do clerical work, pick up food donations and teach English classes, which run in six-week sessions. They are especially in need of volunteer health-care professionals to staff the medical clinic.

MEND is among 15 agencies being profiled this year in the Daily News' seventh annual Season of Sharing project, which has raised nearly $200,000 for local charities. Readers can use the attached clip-out coupon to donate money or goods directly to the agency, or sign up to volunteer.

``Many of our clients live in garages and shacks and trailers. A lot of them are working poor. They wash cars or work in fast-food restaurants. We have a lot of single moms. And we're seeing more senior citizens who can barely get by,'' Hill said. ``We're really focusing on expanding our medical and dental clinic, because that's where the need is really expanding.''

Mirabella met Boch and Landaverde when she visited their home as part of the agency's screening process.

The couple rents a room for $300 a month in a Pacoima house they share with five other families. Boch and Landaverde sleep on a twin-size mattress on the floor. Their 3-1/2-year-old daughter, Diana, has her own smaller mattress. They don't yet have a crib for the baby.

Boch is confident he can get another job in an auto body shop if he gets a decent set of tools. It had taken him months of saving and scouting scouting: see Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts.
