What would it be this time? A blocked field-goal attempt? An interception? A fumbled snap on a field-goal attempt? A safety?

Correct answer: all of the above.

Such was the plight of the the Oakland Raiders

This article is about an American football team. For other uses, see Raider.

Strangely, though, none of those indiscretions swung the game the Chiefs' way for good.

      Instead, this did:

Third quarter, 8 minutes, 39 seconds left, ball at the Kansas City 5 and Chiefs ahead 7-0. The Raiders start the quarter with the ball and have driven 56 yards in 14 plays, gaining six first downs. The Raiders are 5 yards away from tying the game.

Raiders quarterback Billy Joe Hobert Billy Joe Hobert (born January 8, 1971 in Puyallup, Washington) is a former professional American football quarterback. While at the University of Washington, he led the Huskies to a national championship in 1991, during his redshirt sophomore season.  drops back to pass. Here comes linebacker Derrick Thomas Derrick Vincent Thomas (January 1 1967 – February 8 2000) was an NFL linebacker who played his entire professional career for the Kansas City Chiefs. , the Raiders' tight end, is supposed to block Thomas. He doesn't. Thomas hammers Hobert. The ball falls. Cornerback James Hasty scoops it up and runs 80 yards for a touchdown.

Forget the 7-7 tie. Now it's Chiefs 14, Raiders 0.

``We know it's a dogfight against them,'' Kansas City defensive end Neil Smith said. ``But we always expect them to hurt themselves somehow, some way.

``When Derrick made that play and Hasty made that run, I looked over at their sideline. You could see their heads drop. Everybody on our side yelled: `There they go! There they go! ''

      Indeed, there the Raiders went.

And there went the Chiefs, soaring to a 21-4 record in the 1990s at Arrowhead Stadium against teams in their division. And there went 79,281 fans - Arrowhead Stadium's fifth-largest crowd - happily home.

what they were thinking,'' Thomas said of the Raiders' design to block him.

Thomas was a terror all afternoon, with five solo tackles, two sacks for minus-21 yards, a safety and a forced fumble.

``They doubled Neil and Dan Saleaumua and left me with single blocking,'' Thomas said. ``I don't know why they did that, but it's in the record books now. It was one-on-one against the tight end and they went play-action and the quarterback happened to be in the perfect position when I came off the tight end.''

Hobert (19 of 40 passing, 181 yards, one interception) played well in spots for the injured Jeff Hostetler. By comparison, however, Chiefs quarterback Steve Bono threw only 19 passes.

``I have to give Derrick credit for breaking the game open; it was his hit that forced the fumble,'' said Hasty, who won the game here last year against the Raiders by returning an interception 64 yards in overtime.

The Raiders averaged 5.2 yards a run. And Napoleon Kaufman averaged 8.6 yards a run. Problem was, he ran the ball only eight times.

The Raiders offense pushed the Chiefs up and down the middle of the field only to wilt when close to reaching the end zone. The total yardage yard·age 1

``They were in a ballgame, even though the score may not show it,'' Raiders linebacker Pat Swilling said. ``It is hard to believe that as well as we played that this could happen - again.''

Raiders receiver James Jett said: ``We talked about everything before we came here. But talking doesn't get the job done. You've got to do it on the field and we haven't against this team.''

Jerry Ball, a Raiders defensive tackle, said: ``Blocking, tackling and big plays - all fundamentals. Fundamentals are what get you through the tough times and the tough games. We don't have enough of the fundamentals right now.''

In the Chiefs locker room, a chalkboard read: ``Expect to Win.'' Obviously the Chiefs did.

``Once, when I coached in Cleveland, the Browns had not won in Pittsburgh in 16 tries,'' Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer said. ``And finally, we did it. I can't explain this series except for the turnovers. That's the one thing that stands out because we haven't turned the ball over, and they have.''

Not only have the Raiders turned it over, but the Chiefs defense has scored touchdowns off those turnovers, including one in each of the last four Raiders games.
