AGAIN, TROUBADOUR MAKES SHAKESPEARE FUN.

Byline: Julio Martinez Correspondent

HOUSED AT Santa Monica's Miles Playhouse for a limited run, that irreverent band of modern day commedia dell'arte players, the Troubadour troubadour

Having honed his craft with such Bard stepchildren as ``All's Kool That Ends Kool,'' ``Romeo Hall & Juliet Oates'' and ``12th Dog Night,'' Troubadour founder Matt Walker again leads his wildly dedicated troupe of players, dancers and musicians into the breach.

This time out they take on the misguided Scottish nobleman Macbeth, portrayed with Sean Connery-like aplomb by Morgan Rusler, and his helpful mate in dastardly das·tard·ly

The plot actually manages to move along at a relatively brisk pace, despite the outrageously loose adaptation, liberally injected with commedia shtick, impressively staged slapstick battle scenes, improvised audience interaction and a slew of contemporary references, including turning Macduff (Guillermo Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:

Walker and Rusler offer one of the first act's musical highlights as Banquo encourages his friend Macbeth to heed the witches' advice to move up the royal ladder to the tune of ``Go Your Own Way.'' The comedically over-the-top Walker also runs rampant through Macbeth's coronation banquet as the ghost of the murdered Banquo.

The inconsistent sound reinforcement often left the ensemble vocals inaudible as the band blasted through such numbers as ``Landslide'' and ``Don't Stop.'' Nothing could overpower Valenzuela as she took over the show with her laser-like rendering of the Stevie Nicks hit, ``Dreams.''
