Byline: KAREN MAESHIRO Staff Writer

MOJAVE -- After-school programs will be offered at two area schools, with the help of a $200,000 state grant.

The state money is coming from Proposition 49, the ballot measure that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA): [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈaloɪ̯s ˈʃvaɐ̯ʦənˌʔɛɡɐ] , then a private citizen, helped pass in 2002.

``It's an after-school educational and safety grant,'' said Bonnie bon·ny also bon·nie

Ulrich, director of educational services. ``It was the governor's push to have after-school programs for kids to keep them off the streets. It's geared to helping kids academically, not just provide a place for them to go and play.''

The programs will serve children from ages 6 to 17.

The district hopes to sign up 88 kids at each site.

``What we do that makes it unique is we have four elements: educational enhancement, technology, recreation and self-esteem,'' said Jay Duke, executive director of the local Boys & Girls Club.

The club staff will work with teachers on monitoring student academic performance, Duke said.

``If we have a kid who is STAR-testing lower then their grade level, what we are going to be doing is working with them independently to help to get them caught up to where they are supposed to be,'' Duke said.

Ulrich said the programs will offer students a chance to do different things throughout the afternoon.

``They will rotate to different stations. Some kids want to homework. Others want to have letdown letdown

The Mojave district already has some after-school programs, such as remedial classes, enrichment programs for Gifted and Talented Education students, and homework clubs, but Ulrich said the new programs are needed.

``Child care in this area is very minimal and so lots of kids go home and don't have child care,'' Ulrich said. ``It's good for kids who need help with their homework.''
