AFTER LEGAL BATTLES, TEEN-AGE `SPIDER-MAN' FREE TO CLIMB.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

The fate of the big-screen version of ``Spider-Man'' could be determined within the next few days. Filmmaker Chris Columbus tells this column that he's meeting with Columbia Studios about the property that was tied up in litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right. The studio has talked to Chris about directing the film, but he stresses, ``Nothing is final yet. They haven't signed me, and I haven't decided whether I want to make the movie. It all depends on the direction they intend to take - and that will be determined at the meeting we're having. I have to see if we're on the same wavelength.''

with Spider-Man. Finally, I realized I didn't want to simply sit in a room and draw, but my respect for the character has never waned. I want Spider-Man fans to know that, and to be assured I wouldn't want to make the movie unless the script was perfect and historically accurate. The one thing I know about is Spider-Man, which is probably not something to brag about.

With ``Bicentennial Man'' and ``Mrs. Doubtfire'' to their mutual credit, Columbus is anxious to team with Williams again. And yet, he says, even if Robin fit the physical image of ``Spider-Man,'' there's no way Chris would consider him for the role.

``Spider-Man is a teen-ager. I know Jim Carrey “James Carrey” redirects here. For the murder conspirator, see James Carey.

was talked up as having the part at one time, but in the drafts of the script I've seen, the title character has always been a high-school student. And that would be marvelous with me, because there are so many young people deserving of a big break. Let's face it - in this case, Spider-Man would be the star.''

His Airness was accompanied by an entourage of 17 people, and when there didn't seem to be enough room for all of them at the table, Jordan opted to stand the whole night and dance to the music being pumped by DJ John Forte. By the way, Larson stays in touch with one-time series lead Dirk Benedict, a friend. He reports that the actor (who waged a controversial cancer battle with an extreme macrobiotic diet macrobiotic diet Alternative nutrition A diet of whole grains, vegetables–eg, barley, millet, oats, rice, wheat, comprising 50% of dietary intake–DI, vegetables–freshly picked in season, 20-30% DI, soups–eg, vegetables, seaweed, grains,  in the mid-'70s), ``looks great, and has a lot of energy,'' and is putting together a movie he intends to direct. Now living in Montana, Benedict was recently in town staying with another pal, Parker Stevenson. Both Benedict and Stevenson, ex of Kirstie Alley, have gone through ``traumatic divorces, and they're kind of commiserating as kindred spirits,'' notes Larson, who adds, ``As am I. I also hit a wall in that regard recently.''
