The AFSA Distinguished Leadership Award is presented annually to school administrators who exemplify ex·em·pli·fy tr.v. ex·em·pli·fied, ex·em·pli·fy·ing, ex·em·pli·fies 1. a. To illustrate by example: exemplify an argument. b. a high standard of performance and professionalism professionalism the upholding by individuals of the principles, laws, ethics and conventions of their profession. , and meet specific requirements. Each awardee must be an education leader, an AFSA member in good standing, and meet one or more of the following criteria:
1. overcame extraordinary hurdles in turning around their school,
department, or office;
2. served as a mentor to other administrators;
3. practices extraordinary communication and human relations
skills; and/or
4. exemplifies one or more of the characteristics of
professionalism: demonstrated excellence as an instructional
leader; entrepreneurial skills or other economic support for
their school or district; and/or engages the school community
to bring about positive change.
Awardees will present their achievements and innovative ideas to peers nationwide at AFSA's annual leadership conference, Education Administrators' Network: Promoting Best Practices. Following their presentations, winners will receive their awards during a dinner event. The conference will be held in Boston, May 14th, 2005.
