died Feb. 22, 2007, in military action in Iraq, and Jerrod Hays, one of his close personal friends, was critically injured in the incident.

Berry, 39, and Hays, 38, both were members of the AFS Plains States Chapter. The two men worked together for 10 years at Farrar Corp., Norwich, Kan., before Hays moved to Kansas Castings, Belle Plaine Belle Plaine may refer to:

Berry and Hays were members of the same company in the U.S. Army National Guard, and while on patrol in a Humvee, the unit was bombarded by improvised explosive devices. The first shattered Hays' jaw and detached one of his retinas, and the second took Berry's life.

He first enlisted in April 1986 and was deployed overseas in Sept. 2002. After spending a year and a half in active duty, Berry thought his days in the line of fire were over. However, fate sent him back to Iraq in early 2006. At one time, his tour was scheduled to end in April 2007. He wouldn't have made that departure.

"Dave was kind of a quiet, shy guy," said Deborah Durr, human relations manager at Farrar. "He came here after high school a skinny kid, and during the time he was here, he was deployed twice, got married and ended up a war hero."

Berry managed to gain honors even while enjoying his civilian life. During a stay at home in Dec. 2002, he came upon a burning vehicle and pulled a man from the wreckage, saving his life. The National Guard awarded Berry the highest honor given to a soldier during peacetime.

Hays, too, has been recognized for his heroics. After being triaged in the field following the attack, he was soon airlifted to Germany for treatment of his wounds. His recovery has been significant over the past two months, according to Don Hibbs, a coworker co·work·er or co-work·er

"He was here in Kansas [in mid-April] and headed back to Washington D.C. yesterday afternoon," Hibbs said. "He is much improved." His jaw had been replaced with a titanium prosthetic pros·thet·ic
