continues negotiations with EPA staff on potential revisions to the proposed rule. Specifically, AFS is now holding weekly calls with the agency to discuss ways to improve the appropriateness of the regulations and reduce the economic impact this rule could have on the foundry industry.

Published in December 2002, the proposed Iron & Steel MACT rule included requirements for metal melting furnaces, scrap preheaters, pouring stations or areas, pouring, cooling and shakeout Shakeout

Emission limits for metal and organic hazardous air pollutants also were proposed, along with operating limits for capture systems and control devices. In addition, the proposed rule contained several work practice standards, including mandates related to mold vent light-off and scrap inspection.

AFS has been working diligently to improve the proposed Iron & Steel MACT standard, but time is running out. EPA plans to issue the final Iron & Steel MACT rule in August, which means any changes to the proposed rule language will need to be made and undergo internal agency review by the end of July.
