AFS chapter sparks interest in metalcasting in local students.


On Jan. 8, members of the American Foundry Society (AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

Oberlin is perhaps best known for being the home of Oberlin College, a liberal arts college and music conservatory with approximately 3,000 students. , to discuss the processes and career opportunities in the metalcasting industry.

Robert Pogorelc, career services coordinator, said that even though the Lorain County JVS doesn't specifically teach metalcasting, the students from the Precision Machine Trades and Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs found the program very engaging. "The presentation captured the interest of the kids so much, we've offered [Bevington and Kreutz] an indefinite invite to return and give the presentation again," said Pogorelc. "In fact, several of our staff members have suggested taking the students to tour local metalcasting facilities. We have already begun working with Elyria Foundry Co. to set up a tour date."

As part of the presentation, Bevington and Kreutz showed a video, "Casting Call," developed by the Northern Wisconsin AFS chapter to interest high school students in the metalcasting industry.
