Like I have said several times over the last year when making presentations: "Never in a million years did I ever think that I would be the AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

To have my name added to that list is a great personal honor As a verb, to accept a bill of exchange, or to pay a note, check, or accepted bill, at maturity. To pay or to accept and pay, or, where a credit so engages, to purchase or discount a draft complying with the terms of the draft. . It was a privilege to represent AFS, the membership and the metalcasting industry for a year, and it is something that I will treasure forever.

I am hopeful that we have at least started to achieve two things I had set out to accomplish this past year. These include developing and activating a vision and strategic plan for the future of AFS and strongly encouraging the marketing of the metalcasting industry to design engineers, casting buyers, engineering faculty and students, as well as government regulators and legislators. The new slate of officers and directors are in full agreement with the need for and purpose of both the strategic plan and marketing efforts and will advocate their continuing implementation.

It is important to me that I thank those people who have helped me through this year. The AFS Officers and Board of Directors have been unbelievable in terms of their support. They have assisted with the programs that we wanted to change and improve and have provided great encouragement to me in my efforts as the president. The Cast Metals Institute Officers and Board of Directors with efforts to develop new curriculum and distance-learning programs for our educational and training efforts were exciting to work with.

The AFS staff has been put through quite a bit of change this year and has responded well. They are positive about the new changes coming to the Society from the strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.  process and want to be active participants in this process. I have found the associates at AFS to be friendly and helpful to me, and I want to thank them all for their efforts.

My coworkers at Taylor-Pohlman, Inc. (TPi), deserve special thanks. They have responded with enthusiasm to the challenge of my year as AFS president. I couldn't could·n't

have done this job without their support. Many people have asked me during the year how I was able to do this job and what effect it had on our company. My answer was that we at TPi looked at this as an opportunity to develop management talent rather than a hardship. When I was asked 3 years ago to "go through the chairs," our top personnel sat down and worked out a game plan. These people have responded incredibly well and I am extremely proud of their efforts.

A concern of mine going forward for the Society is the level of participation and commitment of all the foundries and suppliers in the metalcasting industry. The AFS and the industry need the support of many more foundries than are currently helping. It is estimated that there are approximately 2800 foundries in the U.S. Of that number, there are about 600 corporate members with suppliers to the industry making up 150 of the 600. That leaves only 450 of 2800 foundries as corporate members. It is imperative that this number improves. One way to view corporate membership is "What will I receive for my membership dollars?" And while that is a valid question, another view of corporate membership is that it is the right thing to do for the industry. This discussion came about recently in a strategic planning meeting and an analogy analogy, in biology, the similarities in function, but differences in evolutionary origin, of body structures in different organisms. For example, the wing of a bird is analogous to the wing of an insect, since both are used for flight.  was made between supporting the local Little League or Boy Scouts Boy Scouts, organization of boys 11 to 17 years old, founded (1907) in Great Britain by Sir Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell. It was incorporated in 1910 in the United States, where its appearance was connected with earlier organizations—the Sons of Daniel  and supporting AFS. While we wouldn't would·n't

think twice about writing a check to support a local cause, many struggle with th e concept of supporting their industry organization. AFS speaks for all foundries and suppliers on many issues regardless of membership status. Please support your Society by becoming a corporate member.

The 104th Casting Congress in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh (pĭts`bərg), city (1990 pop. 369,879), seat of Allegheny co., SW Pa., at the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers, which there form the Ohio River; inc. 1816.  was a big success. Participation in the event was strong for a non-exhibition year. The technical and management papers were of excellent quality and the presentations were well-attended.

In closing, one of the points that was made repeatedly to me during my travels this year is that our Society must change and be more responsive to you, the customer. Believe me, that message is being heard loud and clear at headquarters, and AFS associates and leadership will respond in kind with the programs and services the membership and industry require and deserve. I am pleased to be part of this change and improvement in an industry I grew up in, and I am enormously proud to be a foundryman.

Thank you.
