AFS SE Regional spotlights American Cast Iron Pipe Co.'s new arc furnace via presentation, tour. (Metalcasting Associations).


Marking the 70th consecutive Southeastern Regional Conference, AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

The conference was hosted by the Birmingham, Tennessee, Piedmont and MidSouth Chapters of MS.

A highlight of the conference's 16 presentations was the description of the installation of the new 65 MW D.C. are furnace at American Cast Iron Pipe Co. (ACIPCO ACIPCO American Cast Iron Pipe Company ), Birmingham, Alabama by Ron Kern, ACIPCO. Installed in 2001, the furnace is designed to melt more than 100 tons/hr of iron for the production of ductile iron Ductile iron, also called ductile cast iron or nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis[1]. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron is much more ductile, as the name implies.  pressure pipes for fresh and waste water transport.

"The key to this furnace is the consistency of its melt," said Kern. "We expect this furnace to be an industry leader for years to come."

On the second day of the conference, attendees had the opportunity to tour ACIPCO and see the new furnace and its state-of-the-art computerized control center up close. (For more information MODERN CASTING will detail the installation and start-up of ACIPCO's new furnace in the August issue.)
