AFS Receives Certificate of Appreciation.AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System. AFS - Andrew File System received a certificate of appreciation from the Dept. of Energy's Office of Advanced Automotive Technologies for its participation in the "Design for Product Optimization for Cast Light Metals (Chem.) the metallic elements of the alkali and alkaline earth groups, as sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, etc.; also, sometimes, the metals of the earths, as aluminium. See also: Metal Program." The project was aimed at exploring opportunities for using lighter weight metals to achieve energy savings. AFS served as the "conduit for technology transfer" for the project. The report summary is expected in the first quarter of 2001. The certificate was presented to AFS at the quarterly review meeting on November 27 by Joseph A.
