AFS Midwest Regional Draws Nearly 300 Metalcasting Industry Officals to Cleveland in October. (Metalcasting Associations).With a conference theme of "Evolution of the Foundry Industry," the 2001 AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System. AFS - Andrew File System Midwest Regional Conference in Cleveland on October 14-16 drew 261 metalcasting officials. In addition to technical presentations, the conference's agenda featured four plant tours: Ford Motor Co.'s Cleveland Casting Plant and new Cleveland Aluminum Casting Plant, American Bronze American bronze, Australian bronze domestic turkey. See bronzewing. Corp. and Fairmount Minerals' Best Sand Div. The event's keynote speaker was Roman Krygier, vice president of Ford Motor Co. Powertrain Operations. Tracing some of the trends that have shaped the automaker's approach to casting production, Krygier provided an overview of Ford's lean manufacturing Lean manufacturing is the production of goods using less of everything compared to mass production: less human effort, less manufacturing space, less investment in tools, and less engineering time to develop a new product. system ("Ford Production System") that attendees saw in operation the following day at the Cleveland casting operations. Conference presentations included: "Significant Developments in the History of Metal-casting," Ian Kay, CMI (Computer-Managed Instruction) Using computers to organize and manage an instructional program for students. More than 30 students--from Case Western Reserve Univ., Indiana Univ./Purdue Univ.-Indianapolis, Kent State Univ., Penn State Univ., TriState Univ., Univ. of Windsor and Western Michigan Univ.--participated in the conference. The conference concluded with the passing of the AFS Midwest Regional keys to DaimlerChrysler's Jim Panasiewicz. |
