AFRICAN BEAT; Akeen makes history as the FIRST BLACK man in Garda.Byline: BY BRENDAN KEANE AN African man is set to make history by becoming the first black garda. Akeen Majoyegbe will complete his Garda Reserve training in two weeks and is already working on placement in a Wexford station. He said he's had a great response from the public, who are delighted to see him in uniform. Akeen added: "The reaction from some people has been one of surprise when they see me at the desk or on patrol but to be honest I expected that. "I have to say that people here are very welcoming and the general reaction from the public has been very positive." "In a way my becoming a member of the Garda Reserve Force is a way for me to give back to the community here." Akeem also hopes that his example will lead other members of the African community joining the force. He said: "There is one other person, that I know of, in training at the moment and hopefully more will follow." Akeem arrived in Ireland in 2001 from Nigeria to finish his masters in UCC An abbreviation for the Uniform Commercial Code. and plans to become a fully-fledged officer in the future. His proud parents still live in Africa and are "very excited" by his new job. He added: "We came here because Ireland could provide us with a better standard of living for our children. "There are opportunities here but one has to work hard to avail of them." Akeen will become the ninth member of the Garda Reserve to come from an ethnic minority with four others in training.
