AFLAC NAMES FORMER U.S. AMBASSADOR ARMACOST TO BOARD

 COLUMBUS, Ga., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of AFLAC Incorporated (NYSE: AFL) has voted to name Michael H. Armacost, former U.S. ambassador to Japan, to its board of advisors.
 It is expected that Mr. Armacost will be nominated for election as a full director at the company's next annual meeting of shareholders.
 "Michael Armacost's impeccable credentials and considerable accomplishments as a career foreign service officer will enable him to make invaluable contributions to our board. His thorough understanding of international trade issues and Japan will facilitate AFLAC's role as a major participant in the global marketplace," said Chairman Paul S. Amos.
 Mr. Armacost served as U.S. ambassador to Japan for four years under President George Bush and ambassador to the Philippines under President Ronald Reagan. He has had a distinguished career in governmental service, including undersecretary of state for political affairs, deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, deputy assistant secretary of defense, and senior staff member of the National Security Council.
 Mr. Armacost holds a doctorate from Columbia University, a bachelor's degree from Carleton College, and received Fulbright, Woodrow Wilson, Danforth International and White House graduate fellowships. He has received numerous awards, including the President's Distinguished Service Award (1987 and 1989), the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award (1980), and the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award (1988).
 Since leaving government service, Mr. Armacost has been named distinguished senior fellow and a visiting professor at the Asia/Pacific Research Center at Stanford University.
