AFL-CIO PRESIDENT COMMENTS ON RULES FOR TEAMSTERS' INTERNAL REVIEW BOARD

AFL-CIO PRESIDENT COMMENTS ON RULES FOR
 TEAMSTERS' INTERNAL REVIEW BOARD
WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland made the following comment on federal Judge David Edelstein's order establishing the rules for the Teamsters' internal review board:
Judge Edelstein's order is the latest in a string of orders directed at maximizing the government's control over the Teamsters. The judge's aim is to perpetuate the dead hand of the past as if the IBT's members had not freely and directly chosen the union's present officers in a government-run referendum. This kind of judicial interference with the right of union members to self-government and with the right of unions to their autonomy is excessive and unreasonable. The Teamsters have stated their intent to appeal the judge's order and the AFL-CIO intends to support their appeal.
