AFL-CIO National President John J. Sweeney to Be Honored by Philadelphia Based Fund.


PHILADELPHIA -- A national educational scholarship fund founded a decade ago in memory of a former member of the National Labor Relations Board National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), independent agency of the U.S. government created under the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 (Wagner Act), and amended by the acts of 1947 (Taft-Hartley Labor Act) and 1959 (Landrum-Griffin Act), which affirmed labor's right  who practiced law here, will honor AFL-CIO AFL-CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

 President John J. Sweeney at an event slated for March 22, 2007 (6 PM) at 1301 S. Columbus Avenue, Penn's Landing Penn's Landing is the waterfront area of the Center City along the Delaware River section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is so named since the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, was storied to have first docked here in 1682.  Caterers.

The Peggy Browning Fund was established in 1997 in Memory of Margaret (Peggy) Browning, a well known Philadelphia union-side labor attorney. In 1994 when she was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), she became the first union-side lawyer ever to receive such an appointment. The NLRB, established as part of the "New Deal" legislation of the Roosevelt Administration There have been two Presidents of the United States with the surname "Roosevelt":

After she died in 1997, Peggy Browning's husband, Joseph Lurie (also a Philadelphia attorney), along with others, established the not for profit fund in her memory. The fund's primary "mission" is to provide fellowships to law students "for challenging work and educational experiences in the area of workers' rights."

Since its founding, the Fund has established internships and fellowships for nearly 200 law students with placements at the United States Department of Labor, the NLRB, labor unions, worker's rights centers and legal aid organizations.

As President of the AFL-CIO, John J. Sweeney presides over a labor federation whose affiliates collectively represent the interests of more than 10 million workers nationwide. In choosing to honor President Sweeney on the Fund's 10th Anniversary, the Fund is recognizing the partnership role that the AFL-CIO and the Fund have established with many of the nation's top law schools in working to provide experience to law students who seek careers in labor law labor law, legislation dealing with human beings in their capacity as workers or wage earners. The Industrial Revolution, by introducing the machine and factory production, greatly expanded the class of workers dependent on wages as their source of income.  or workplace rights.
