AFI TO SHOW CLASSIC FILMS ON WEB SITE.

The American Film Institute American Film Institute (AFI), nonprofit organization established in Washington, D.C., in 1967 by the National Endowment for the Arts to preserve and catalog American films and television, to provide work grants for new and established filmmakers, and to increase , setting another cyberspace Coined by William Gibson in his 1984 novel "Neuromancer," it is a futuristic computer network that people use by plugging their minds into it!  OnLine Cinema on Jan. 22 with the 20-minute Charlie Chaplin comedy ``The Rink,'' released in 1916, complete with a musical score. The site is www.afionline.org/cinema.

In the film, Chaplin creates his trademark chaos as a waiter in a restaurant. The pratfall-laden action and several of the characters then shift to an ice rink and then to a party.

Los Angeles-based AFI plans to start showing a 1921 silent, Buster Keaton's ``The Boat,'' in February with the goal of starting a program of classic movies, based on the response to the first films.

``This is part of our effort to start digitalizing our archives,'' Harries said. ``Mostly, we're doing this to expose people to this heritage.''

AFI launched the AFI OnLine Web site in 1995, located at www.afionline.org. The site includes Cinemedia, described as the Internet's largest film and media directory with links to more than 10,000 other sites.
