 despatched the kit 3674 miles to Kabul after being told the cadets did not have any strips.

Scottish troops training the cadets for the match had sent the plea via International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander, who visited them last month.

And the boxload of Rangers gear was heading out to Kabul the day after Murray got the message.

Draw The match took place in soaring temperatures on Wednesday at the Kabul Military Training Centre and ended in a 2-2 draw.

Among those playing for the coalition team - who wore strips donated by West Ham Coordinates:

Murray said yesterday that Rangers were happy to help British troops whenever they could. He said: "We are totally committed to supporting the brave members of the armed services who put their lives on the line for their country.

"These men and women are the true heroes in life and we are delighted to help in any way possible.

"Last season, the club was honoured to welcome soldiers from the Argyll and Sutherlands and Marines from 45 Commando - who were just back from Helmand - to games against Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Hearts and our supporters gave them a standing ovation.

"This football club will continue to support and recognise these individuals who give everything for their country."

Alexander said: "I was really impressed to hear about the Scots boys' efforts to arrange this match and was happy to ask David Murray for his help.

"This was a tremendous gesture by Rangers and I know the troops really appreciated it as well."
