AFGE REACHES OUT TO SAN DIEGO'S FEDERAL WORKERS IN HIGH-PROFILE ORGANIZING CAMPAIGN

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Tapping into the rich source of potential union members working in the San Diego area, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), AFL-CIO, has launched a high- profile organizing campaign to promote the union's "members only" benefits program, and to give workers an opportunity to voice their concerns about base closures, consolidations, downsizing and other issues affecting their pay and benefits. Events run from Sept. 20-30. A training seminar for Defense Department local leaders and members will also be held from Sept. 25-27.
"We want to reach out to all federal workers and let them know that they can have a greater voice through AFGE membership than standing alone," said union national president John N. Sturdivant. He and Andrea Brooks, the union's national vice president for California and Nevada, will be participating in several events, including Union Fairs and Lunch and Learn organizing sessions.
"Although federal workers are willing to do their fair share to bring down the deficit, we do not believe they should be expected to do more than other Americans," the union leaders said. "We hope that every worker in the San Diego area will attend these events. We will have experts available to answer the tough questions and will offer solutions that we believe will encourage many employees to become new AFGE members," they added.
Employees who attend the Union Fairs will be able to pick up information on AFGE's affiliation with the 14-million-member AFL-CIO, and how organized labor works together to help federal employees fight for legislative issues on Capitol Hill.
The American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, is the largest union for federal workers, representing some 700,000 government employees in the United States and overseas, as well as of the District of Columbia. The union represents some 39,000 federal employees in the San Diego area.
