funding on projects using the UMC 1000," said Michael Hatfield, AFC's vice president of marketing. "We are excited to offer that option."

AFC has a significant deployment of UMC 1000 systems within REA qualified telephone companies across the country. To date these companies have used internal funds to purchase the UMC 1000 because of its advantages in network flexibility and transport technology options. The REA listing will provide these companies as well as others greater access to this technology.

Advanced Fibre Communications, based in Petaluma, is the developer, marketer, and manufacturer of the UMC 1000, a next-generation digital loop carrier.

The UMC 1000 allows phone companies around the world with moderate concentrations of subscribers to provide advanced telecommunications capabilities at a lower cost than previous technology allowed. Its advanced architecture improves economics by supporting multiple transmission media including copper, fiber optics, and radio.

The UMC 1000 also greatly increases network flexibility through drop and insert In a multichannel transmission system, a drop and insert is a process that diverts (drops) a portion of the multiplexed aggregate signal at an intermediate point, and introduces (inserts) a different signal for subsequent transmission in the same position, e.g. , star, and ring configurations. It strikes down the conventional wisdom that advanced loop telecommunications technology is affordable only for high-density applications. Versions of the system include an ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  standards version for North America and a CEPT/ETSI version for other parts of the world.
