The project is funded by Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The AF Group has previously undertaken several commissions to develop the telecommunications sector in southern Africa, including assignments in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia. This activity supports the deregulation of the telecommunications sector. TCC, the regulatory authority for telecommunications in Tanzania, requires consulting assistance to develop its capacity and expertise in order to become a truly efficient and effective regulator. The assignment, which is to run over a period of two years, is intended to support the development of TCC's regulatory function and will contribute to ensuring that TCC achieves levels of efficiency and professionalism that are fully on a par with international standards. The focus will be on areas such as tariffs and legal issues relating to intercommunication, frequency planning, policy-making, regulatory matters, information technology and convergence, consumer issues, organisational development and management matters. The contract is worth slightly in excess of SEK 8 million. The project will involve staff stationed in Tanzania for extended periods and also specialist support called in for shorter intervals.
