AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY SOCIETY URGES MEMBERS TO COMPLY WITH
BREAST-IMPLANT MORATORIUM, BUT SAYS DECISION IS INDIVIDUAL
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) today said that it is urging its members to cooperate with the FDA's call for a moratorium on the use of silicone gel implants, pending further review of what FDA Commissioner David Kessler, M.D., calls "new information" related to the devices' safety. However, ASAPS President Edward Truppman, M.D., emphasized that the moratorium is voluntary, and that no professional organization is in a position to force its members to comply.
"Although we are urging compliance with the moratorium, it is conceivable that there are some situations in which plastic surgeons may choose to decide, on a case-by-case basis and at their own liability risk, what course of action is in the best interest of their patients," said Truppman.
"We are especially concerned about reports that some women are delaying mastectomies, because they insist on having silicone-gel breast implants," Truppman said. "There are other patients who are in the middle of their reconstructive process, or who need implant replacement, for whom this situation has caused tremendous psychological pain and uncertainty."
Truppman stressed that plastic surgeons are indeed concerned if there is any new, scientifically valid information that casts doubt upon the safety of gel-filled breast implants. "We are concerned about reports that new data has surfaced that possibly questions the safety of silicone-gel implants, but we have yet to see the data ourselves. Until the FDA gives us the opportunity to review the materials, we cannot make any judgment as to the scientific validity of the studies and reports to which FDA Commissioner David Kessler has referred. We are, however, making every effort to obtain access to the new information as quickly as possible," he said.
"As physicians, we will not make judgments based upon media reports or third-hand information," Truppman added. "We are asking for the cooperation of the FDA in allowing plastic surgeons to have access to any relevant information."
ASAPS has approximately 900 members nationwide who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and who concentrate their practices in aesthetic (cosmetic) procedures.
