, to build, own and operate a 190 MW gas-fired combined cycle A combined cycle is characteristic of a power producing engine or plant that employs more than one thermodynamic cycle. Heat engines are only able to use a portion of the energy their fuel generates (usually less than 50%). The remaining heat from combustion is generally wasted.  power plant at the site of one of AES' existing power plants in Tiszaujvaros, located in eastern Hungary.

Electricity from the Phoenix Project will be sold to the MVM under the terms of a 15 - 20 year power purchase agreement, which is expected to be signed in the near future. Commercial operation of the Phoenix plant is expected to commence in the year 2004. Fuel for the facility will either come from a nearby pipeline owned by the Hungarian oil and gas company, MOL or from Gazprom.

Successful completion of this transaction is subject to a number of conditions, including financing, permits and other government approvals.
