AEROSPACE INDUSTRY TO LOOK TOWARD THE FUTURE.

VALENCIA - Aerospace industry executives from throughout northern Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County will gather in Valencia Thursday to participate in the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  2000 Aerospace Conference.

The first such event hosted by the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  is expected to attract 125 representatives from aerospace firms and their suppliers, government offices and municipal economic agencies, who will listen to industry procurement officers and lawmakers.

``By attending the conference we hope they gain an understanding of where aerospace is heading in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, ,'' said Dena Maloney, director of the College of the Canyons Center for Applied Competitive Technologies. ``The supplier companies can learn from prime aerospace companies, better understand their needs.''

The conference will be from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the Hyatt Valencia. The fee is $60, including breakfast and lunch. A $10 discount is given to companies registering three or more people.

College officials said they modeled their program after a similar conference hosted by El Camino College El Camino College is a two-year public community college located in the city of Torrance in Los Angeles County, California. It is commonly referred to as "El Co" or "ECC". It consists of 37 buildings spanning an area of roughly 26 acres (105,000 m²).  for industry leaders in South Los Angeles South Los Angeles is the official name for a large geographic and cultural area lying to the southwest and southeast of downtown Los Angeles, California. The area was formerly called South Central Los Angeles, and is still sometimes called South Central.  area.

``We figured that our local businesses probably aren't participating in that conference,'' Maloney said. ``They needed that type of information.''

Participants are expected to come from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  and Ventura counties, as well as from Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.

Speakers will include representatives from Boeing Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, GenCorp Aeroject, Hughes Space and Communications, Raytheon Electronic Systems and the California Manufacturing Technology Center.

U.S. Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, and Assemblyman George Runner, R-Lancaster, will give the keynote addresses.

``The aerospace industry, particularly the smaller supplier chain manufacturers, has been an important part of the state's economy,'' Maloney said. ``The health of this industry is vital to California as new projects develop and future contracts are awarded.''

The city of Santa Clarita, the California Manufacturing Technology Center and the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce also will sponsor the event.
