AER Lingus appointed a new chief executive yesterday to succeed Dermot Mannion.

Christoph Mueller, formerly aviation director at TUI Travel, will take up the post on October 1. The 47-year-old was previously with Daimler Benz Aerospace, Lufthansa AG, the Sabena Group, DHL DHL

Aer Lingus chairman Colm Barrington said Mr Mueller was chosen after a "rigorous recruitment campaign".

He added: "We have chosen a candidate with a proven track record." Mr Mueller said there are many challenges ahead but is "excited about the medium term prospects."

Mr Mannion announced he was stepping down in April to allow a new chief to bring fresh thinking and ideas to the role.
