AEP SERVICE CORPORATION TO CEASE OPERATIONS AT CANTON COMPUTER COMPLEX, CONSOLIDATE FUNCTIONS IN COLUMBUS

CANTON, Ohio, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Electric Power Service Corporation (NYSE: AEP) announced today that it intends to cease operations at its Canton Computer Complex, and that all processing functions at Canton will be consolidated into the company's Columbus data center.
"The decision to consolidate these data center operations is a part of the ongoing restructuring activities involving the AEP Service Corporation and Columbus Southern Power and Ohio Power companies," said Joseph A. Valentine, vice president - information services for the AEP Service Corporation.
The AEP Service Corporation, which has headquarters in Columbus, is the management and technology arm of the seven-state American Electric Power System. AEP has seven electric operating companies, including Ohio Power Company and Columbus Southern Power Company.
Labor Day weekend is the target date for Canton Computer Complex operations to be consolidated at AEP Service Corporation headquarters in Columbus.
Some 26 Canton Computer Complex employees are affected by the consolidation. The Canton employees will be considered for positions at either the AEP Service Corporation headquarters in Columbus; at the data processing facilities for the combined operations of Columbus Southern Power and Ohio Power which will be located in Canton; or elsewhere in the AEP System.
The Canton Computer Complex is presently responsible for three major functions. It handles the payroll system for approximately 20,000 employees throughout the AEP System. It also prepares bills for customers of all AEP operating companies except Columbus Southern Power. In addition, it prepares bills for non-affiliated electric utilities that buy electric energy from AEP on a wholesale basis.
"We're confident that we can accomplish this transition smoothly and without any impact on the customers of AEP operating companies," Valentine said.
Employees who are offered positions elsewhere in the System will be eligible for relocation assistance, while employees who are not offered positions elsewhere in the System will be eligible for the severance package that has been offered throughout the restructuring process.
According to current plans, the Canton Computer Complex will not be vacated after the consolidation is effective. The Columbus Southern Power/Ohio Power data processing unit will be utilizing the facility on an interim basis while renovation work is carried out in the CSP/Ohio Power Canton general office building.
