Hambrick and Dr. Kim Good conducted an extensive search of academic databases to locate research on the instructional effectiveness of the use of graphic organizers--visual tools such as flow charts, diagrams and grids that organize complex information into meaningful displays. Using the "No Child Left Behind Act The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-110), commonly known as NCLB (IPA: /ˈnɪkəlbiː/), is a United States federal law that was passed in the House of Representatives on May 23, 2001 " criteria for scientifically based research, the researchers reviewed 29 studies that applied rigorous, systematic and objective procedures to obtain reliable and valid knowledge relevant to education activities and programs.

"From our survey of research on the use of graphic organizers with elementary and secondary students, we saw strong evidence that visual learning strategies can improve student learning and performance in a broad range of content areas," said Dr. Doris Redfield, executive director of IARE and vice president of research, AEL. "The results of this review should prove helpful to educators who are looking for Looking for

innovative ways to engage students at a range of grade and ability levels."

The research review revealed that students using graphic organizers show achievement benefits across the major curriculum content areas, across grade levels and across student populations. The majority of the existing studies examined the use of graphic organizers with students in fourth through eighth grades.

In addition, the research showed that the process of developing and using a graphic organizer enhances students' critical thinking or higher order thinking skills The concept of higher order thinking skills became a major educational agenda item with the 1956 publication of Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives.

The simplest thinking skills are learning facts and recall, while higher order skills include critical thinking,
and aids in the retention and recall of information.

"Our visual learning software products are widely used by teachers in schools around the country. We sponsored this review to provide educators with unbiased evidence of the instructional effectiveness of the use of graphic organizers," said Mona Westhaver, president and co-founder, Inspiration Software. "Our company is committed to continuing to explore how these types of teaching and learning strategies improve student achievement."
