OTC See over-the-counter market (OTC). :ZILG), one of the leading providers of 8-bit microcontrollers, will be demonstrating the first model train controlled by a personal digital assistant (PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM). ) running either the PalmOS or the PocketPC operating system operating system (OS) Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs. at the 2003 PalmSource Developer Seminar Series on May 6th and 7th. ZiLOG's eZ80Acclaim!(TM) Flash microcontroller A single chip that contains the processor (the CPU), non-volatile memory for the program (ROM or flash), volatile memory for input and output (RAM), a clock and an I/O control unit. acts as a bridge between the PDA and the model train, while the ZiLOG eZ80 Webserver controls the train over the Internet or wirelessly using Palm's new TungstenC 802.11 PDA. The company is also offering a number of other demonstrations in which its microcontroller technology is integrated with a PDA to improve real world applications, including a telescope, a vending machine vending machine, coin-operated, automatic device for selling goods. Many vending machines are capable of making change, and some of the more sophisticated ones accept paper money or credit cards. and an MP3 player A digital music player that supports the MP3 format, which was the audio format that started a revolution in online music downloads and distribution. All portable music players, the iPod being the most popular, support MP3 along with one or more other audio formats. . The HO-scale model locomotives, which are each equipped with a ZiLOG eZ80 Acclaim! microcontroller, operate on a four foot by eight foot layout. A software application called LocoPalm, developed by ZiLOG's Senior Design Engineer Steve Pope, is installed on the PDA and allows the control of the train functions such as track switching, multiple trains, lights, sound, throttle, and direction. The software interfaces to the microprocessor in the train using IrDA. In addition, the position of the trains on the track can be monitored through the PDA interface. "We are demonstrating new and exciting ways that a PDA can be integrated into a variety of areas in our lives," said Steve Pope. "ZiLOG's embedded solutions are a natural bridge for connecting and controlling just about anything through the Web." ZiLOG will also be demonstrating its eZ80Acclaim! and Z8 Encore! development kits. Show attendees can purchase these kits at special show prices. The Z8Encore! kit, which will sell for $49.95, includes the Windows version of ZiLOG Developer Studio (ZDSII), an ANSI-C Compiler and C source-level debugger (programming, tool) source-level debugger - A debugger that shows the programmer the line or expression in the source code that resulted in a particular machine code instruction of a running program loaded in memory. , a full-featured evaluation board, a sample Flash device, an RS-232 to ZDB ZDB Zeitschriftendatenbank (States Library Berlin; specialized database for international serial titles) ZDB Zimbabwe Development Bank ZDB Zero Delay Buffer ZDB Zeta Data Base ZDB Zero Downtime Backup ZDB Zero Byte Data Base cable, a 9VDC VDC Volts Direct Current VDC Venture Development Corporation VDC Vehicle Dynamic Control VDC Village Development Committee (Nepal) VDC Virtual Data Center VdC Verband der Cigarettenindustrie universal power supply, and a target module interface board. It also includes ZiLOG's Xtools(TM), an intuitive, production-quality suite of tools designed to reduce total system development time. The eZ80Acclaim! kit, which will be offered at a special show price of $199.95, provides a complete set of tools to either evaluate the eZ80Acclaim! devices or to develop a variety of new applications including vending machines, point of sale, security, automation, communication, industrial control, facility monitoring and remote control. The kit features two primary boards: the eZ80 Development Platform and an eZ80 Module. In addition, all the necessary hardware, software, and technical documentation are included in the kit for design to begin immediately.
Additional Details on ZiLOG Product Demonstrations:
eZ80 Acclaim! Product Demos:
Telescope Demonstration: The telescope, which incorporates
ZiLOG's eZ80 Acclaim!, communicates with a Palm Pilot
interface via the eZ80 IrDA port. A GUI-based Palm application
automatically directs the telescope toward the appropriate
constellation. The Palm controls the telescope via an IrDA
port.
Vending Machine Demonstration: ZiLOG will detail how the
vending machine industry can use the eZ80 Acclaim! to maintain
and evaluate inventory levels from any Web browser. In
addition, it will illustrate how PDAs may become a
next-generation method of buying things from a vending
machine.
MP3 Player Demonstration: The eZ80 Acclaim! Flash
microcontroller will allow the new Palm TungstenC device to
select and play songs on an MP3 player.
Z8Encore! Product Demos:
IrDA LCD Name Board Demonstration: The Z8 Encore! allows
messages to be typed on a Palm device and "beamed" to a
signboard using the Palm's IrDA port.
