The Franklin Institute Franklin Institute, in Philadelphia; chartered and opened 1824 "for the promotion of the mechanic arts," the first of its kind in the country. It was named for Benjamin Franklin. Since the 19th cent.  Science Museum to Host Interactive Termite termite or white ant, common name for a soft-bodied social insect of the order Isoptera. WHAT:   The 2004 Towering Termite Tour, the world's largest traveling
        interactive termite exhibit housed in a two-story high
        inflatable termite, is swarming into Philadelphia just in time
        for Pennsylvania Termite Awareness Week, May 10-16, 2004.
        Designed to educate and entertain kids and their parents, the
        belly of this bug (which is 69,000 times the size of a real
        termite) houses terrariums of real termite colonies, unusual
        materials attacked by termites like piano keys and magazines,
        fun learning games, strange but true termite facts (for every
        human on Earth, entomologists calculate there may be as many
        as 1,000 pounds of termites!) and valuable take home
        information for parents. Admission is included in the price of
        admission to The Franklin Institute Science Museum.

        10-16, 2004 to be Pennsylvania Termite Awareness Week.

        providing an enriching and entertaining science exhibit to
        curious youngsters.
