ADVISORY/West Hollywood City Council to Consider a Resolution Denouncing the War in Iraq; Set to Be First City in Southern California to Take Official Position against the War.News/Calendar Editors ADVISORY...for Tuesday Tuesday: see week. (Jan. 21) --(BUSINESS WIRE)
WHAT: In keeping with the City's long-standing commitment to human
rights, the West Hollywood City Council will consider a
resolution Tuesday opposing the United States' proposed war
against Iraq. If the resolution passes, West Hollywood will
join 41 other American cities in condemning a unilateral
preemptive military strike, which would violate long-standing
principles of international law and endanger citizens of the
United States and Iraq.
"The Bush Administration has not provided enough evidence to
the American people and the world that Iraq poses an imminent
threat to the national security of the United States that
justifies military action. In fact, the use of force against
Iraq may pose a greater danger than currently exists because of
its potential to destabilize the Middle East and provoke Iraq
to use any weapons it has against the United States," says West
Hollywood Councilmember John Duran, who is proposing the
resolution.
"The current arguments for war are based primarily on
propaganda supplied by the Bush Administration and contradicted
by the United Nations, as well as other experts in the
international community and world leaders. The people of the
United States already suffered grievous loss of life in the
terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. A war against Iraq will
only add to the loss of life in the Unites States and in Iraq,"
he continued.
The resolution will be considered as part of the regular City
Council meeting.

from local organizations opposed to the war.
