What: Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), and Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA)
will be at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) campus
to celebrate the official opening of the university's
Bioengineering Institute (BEI.) During a presentation before
central Massachusetts business and community leaders,
Kennedy, McGovern and BEI director Timothy R. Gerrity, Ph.D.,
will lay out the vision of BEI as a promoter of job creation
and economic vitality by facilitating the conversion of
research discoveries into new products and new companies in
the region.
Who: The WPI Bioengineering Institute is an organization dedicated
to creating life-science based products by commercializing
the results of academic research. The commercialization
process is founded on academic, industry, and government
partnerships which blend the intellect of academia, the
market needs of industry, and the public policy needs of
government. Through this effort, BEI creates innovative
solutions to healthcare problems and in so doing stimulates
new manufacturing, creates jobs, and promotes overall
economic development in Central Massachusetts.
BEI is the anchor tenant of Gateway Park - a 15-acre, master
planned redevelopment of a former Worcester brownfield. The
project is being developed by Gateway LLC - a public-private
partnership between WPI and the Worcester Business
Development Council. At build-out, the development could
feature 1 million square feet of mixed-use space.
