"With so many issues facing our country, we feel it's important to help our customers make their voice count." This public service initiative is part of a year-long effort where Vons has teamed up with Secretary of State Bill Jones and various voter registration groups to help increase voter participation in the election process by providing voting materials to 500,000 Vons/Pavilions shoppers. "Many potential voters don't realize they need to register to vote well in advance of Election Day," said Secretary of State Bill Jones. "With the help of Vons, we are able to deliver that message directly to Californians in their own neighborhoods." Through Oct. 10, every California Vons and Pavilions stores will have voter registration forms and information available so customers have the opportunity to register to vote this November. The supermarket chain will also have forms available in Spanish to help reach shoppers who represent a large segment of the eligible voter population. Public service announcements are being broadcast in stores through Nov. 7 to encourage shoppers to "get out the vote." Earlier this year, Vons provided more than 250,000 registration forms to customers and also ran public service announcements in stores to encourage voter participation during the California primary. In all, Vons hopes its efforts will help register half a million California voters this year. "We want to try and make voter registration as easy as buying a loaf of bread," said Keller. "Through these efforts, we hope customers will participate in one of the most fundamental privileges that we have as a nation, and that is the opportunity to vote." Vons is a division of Safeway Inc.
