TOPIC: A recent report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that infants
and children should not get vaccines that contain thimerosal, which is a
preservative containing mercury, according to an article by USA Today. The
panel, consisting of 15 experts appointed by the IOM, did not find scientific
evidence that small doses of thimerosal is harmful, the article says. However,
thimerosal contains ethylmercury, which at high levels can lead to
neurodevelopmental disorders. Although most vaccines containing thimerosal were
removed from the shelves by the middle of last year, some experts believe there
are still vaccines in clinics that contain the preservative. EXPERTS:
