ADVISORY...for Tuesday (Oct. 28)

UCSF UCSF - University of California at San Francisco will officially launch its new UCSF Mission Bay Campus with a festive celebration and dedication ceremony on Tuesday, October 28.

More than 400 faculty, staff, and invited friends are expected to join UCSF leadership at this special event.

Highlights include a dedication ceremony hosted by Chancellor J. Michael Bishop, announcement of the largest contribution from individual donors in UCSF history, a look at the future campus via a dramatic display of weather balloons weather balloon, balloon used in the measurement and evaluation of mostly upper atmospheric conditions (see atmosphere). Information may be gathered during the vertical ascent of the balloon through the atmosphere or during its motions once it has reached a predetermined maximum altitude. marking all building locations, and presentations by scientists.

Media are invited to cover. Interviews with campus leadership and scientists available.

near 16th and 3rd Streets in San Francisco

expected to participate.

-- Dramatic and colorful release of weather balloons: 14 blue and

gold weather balloons will be moored on 40-foot tethers to

mark the location of each campus building.

-- Unveiling of a pyramid sculpture to mark the official opening

of Koret Quad, a 3.2-acre green at the center of the new UCSF

Mission Bay.

-- Unveiling of a dedication paver with the date of the event.

-- Performance by Touch of Class Choir from San Francisco's

Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School

7:00-7:30 PM

-- UCSF Foundation Annual Meeting and Dinner: Media are invited

to shoot photos and video at this event, which will take place

in a special tent set up at the UCSF Mission Bay site. The

event acknowledges donors who have given collectively $230

million to date to make UCSF Mission Bay possible.

PARKING: Reporters and photographers covering the event should check-in at the parking kiosk for directions to the media parking area. Parking lot entrance is on 16th Street, west of 3rd Street.

UCSF Mission Bay -- a 43-acre health sciences campus that is changing San Francisco urban landscape and moving biomedical research in new directions -- is the centerpiece of the city's 303-acre Mission Bay development project.
