Findings from two separate studies presented during the Pediatric Academic Societies conference, conclude that the new conjugated pneumococcal pneumococcal /pneu·mo·coc·cal/ (-kok´al) pertaining to or caused by pneumococci. vaccine, Prevnar, effectively protects Native American children from seven types of Streptococcus hemolytic streptococcus  any streptococcus capable of hemolyzing erythrocytes, classified as a-hemolytic type, producing a zone of greenish discoloration much smaller than the clear zone produced by the ß-hemolytic type about the colony on blood agar; and the ß-hemolytic type, producing a clear zone of hemolysis immediately around the colony on blood agar. The most virulent streptococci belong to the latter group. pneumoniae bacteria. The studies, also show that the vaccine helps protect vaccinated children from becoming carriers of those seven types of bacteria.
