Flexcar can date its origins to March 1998, when its Portland, Oregon office was founded as a separate company (Car Sharing Portland) by David Brook; Challenge this Friday, September 6. Sponsored by Flexcar, the nation's largest and oldest car-sharing service, the Flexcar Challenge pits men and women against the notion that having a car is a necessity. Participants in the month-long event have agreed to hand over their car keys and travel for 30 days -- to work, the gym, the grocery store -- everywhere -- by means of alternative transportation such as the bus, train, bicycle bicycle, light, two-wheeled vehicle driven by pedals. WHAT: Opening Ceremony for the Flexcar Challenge, in which twelve
D.C.-area citizens will give up their cars for an entire month and
travel by means of "alternative" transportation, thus reducing
traffic, pollution and dependence on foreign oil. There will be a
"handoff" ceremony in which participants hand over the keys to
their car and receive a Flexcar key and Flexcar Challenge
Participant Kit.
