Twelve students from throughout L.A. County have taken the adage "one person can make a difference" to heart. With a combined 10,000 hours of community service, they will receive the Bill Coggins Community Leadership Scholarship at the 2003 Pursuit of Excellence Awards Dinner scheduled for 6:30 pm on June 5, 2003 at the Hacienda Hotel The Hacienda Hotel is a historic site in New Port Richey, Florida. It is located at 5621 Main Street. On October 24, 1996, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  (LAX) in El Segundo El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917. Its products include navigation and computer systems, aircraft parts, office machines, telephone apparatus, and .

The scholarship program was developed by the Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield.  Watts Counseling and Learning Center to provide financial assistance to student volunteers who demonstrate a commitment to community service and leadership. Each recipient has an inspiring story to tell:

-- Candace Fields, from Compton, has been accepted to Xavier

College, and contributed her volunteer efforts to St. Francis

Medical Center in Lynwood.

-- Kathy Le, from El Monte, is a student at U.C. Riverside, and

has tutored children in El Monte, helped decorate Rose Parade

floats and been a hospital volunteer in Baldwin Park.

-- Erica Quezada, from South El Monte South El Monte, city (1990 pop. 20,850), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the San Gabriel Valley; inc. 1958. Manufactures include transportation equipment, electrical and plastic products, clothing, textiles, machinery, and furniture. There is poultry processing. , attends CSULA CSULA California State University Los Angeles  and provides

individual mentoring and tutoring for children at Menlo Ave.

-- Eric Teasley, from Inglewood, has been accepted to Stanford

-- Laura Torres, from Los Angeles, will be attending Grinnell

College, and has provided volunteer assistance at Inner-City

Struggle, Hollenbeck Middle School and at Queens Care.

Other recipients are: Alberto Gonzalez (Pico Rivera); Jazelle Burries (Compton); Sylvia Cibrowski (Los Angeles); Laura Cuellar (Los Angeles); Ji Lee (San Pedro); Jessica Ou (San Marino); and Shodhan Sivani (Canoga Park). All are available for interviews, along with local graduates (elementary through college) who have achieved academic success in spite of many obstacles.
