WHAT: Kick-off of California Railroad Safety Week in Los Angeles
-- a statewide effort to highlight the alarming problem of
motorist and pedestrian fatalities and incidents at
highway-rail crossings in California, and urge residents to
take personal responsibility for their safety. Southern
California efforts supported by Metrolink, MTA, and Caltrans
to educate residents about these dangerous and illegal
activities include increased school- and community-based
education, installation of 1200 new safety signs at railroad
crossings, and the launch of new English and Spanish Public
Service Announcements and billboards.

WHY: In 2002, there were 140 incidents at highway-rail crossings
in California, resulting in 30 fatalities. Also in 2002, there
were 90 trespasser fatalities along California's railroads,
accounting for 26% of all railroad trespasser incidents and
fatalities nationwide.
