WHAT: This week, UCSF scientists, students and staff began moving into the new UCSF Genentech Hall at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus. Genentech Hall, which broke ground in 1999, is the first of three research buildings in Phase 1 of UCSF's ambitious development of its 43-acre research campus at Mission Bay. Research in UCSF Genentech Hall includes structural and chemical biology, as well as molecular and cell biology. Genentech Hall has been designed to maximize collaboration between scientists in different disciplines to boost new research insights. More than 900 scientists, staff and students will work and study here when the move-in is completed in May. Genentech Hall tour will include a look at a fifth-floor research laboratory and the novel features that spur collaboration. WHEN: 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 WHERE: Front (north-facing) entrance of Genentech Hall, at 16th St. and Owens St. (near 16th and 3rd St.) WHO: Reg Kelly, Ph.D., UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor for Research BACKGROUND: The two other Phase 1 research buildings are already under construction at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus: the Developmental Biology and Genetics building, to be completed this year, and the Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3), due for completion next year. A community center and housing complex are also slated in this first phase. The long-range plan for the UCSF Mission Bay Campus includes 20 buildings, doubling the research, teaching and support capacity over the next 20 years.
